I designed 6 outdoor/asia cross-over stickers.
Overview
My concept is to show the outdoors in a more comical sense with an uplifting message. 失败是成功之母, (shī bài shì chéng gōng zhī mǔ) is a chinese proverb translating to "Failure is the mother of all success." I wanted this to guide my designs as I sketched and built this character subject in these small worlds.
Approach
In my sketching process I was drawing inspiration from the brand "Life is Good". I wanted to do something outdoor themed, but didn't want to stick with the basic cliché outdoor sticker ideas like a tree, mushroom, tent, etc... As I thought about the "Life is Good" brand, I liked the concept of having a main character doing a sport. In my design I decided to go with the opposite of that and have a main character failing at each outdoor sport he did.
I also drew inspiration from chinese art. A lot of traditional paintings will have a signature or some sort of hanzi in the corner. I like the way that looks, and with my little chinese knowledge and skill, it was something I wanted to include. I included the chinese proverb in said style in each corner of the designs. I as well included the traditional red sun that is often portrayed in these traditional pieces of chinese art.
